Lufthansa’s First Allegris Boeing 787 with New Business Class Arrives in September

Lufthansa is gearing up to welcome its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner with the new Allegris business class seats in September 2025, according to CEO Carsten Spohr during the airline’s Q2 earnings call. However, there’s a catch: a large portion of these business class seats won’t be available right away. This hiccup is due to ongoing certification delays by the US aviation regulator, which has been holding up the delivery of these much-anticipated aircraft.

In light of these challenges, Lufthansa plans to deploy the new 787-9 Dreamliner on routes with less demand for premium seating, such as the Germany-Montreal route. This decision comes as the airline currently operates five 787-9s and has 30 more on order, with 15 already prepped and stored in the US. The main hurdle remains the certification of the Allegris seats, which has been a sticking point in getting these planes fully operational.

Lufthansa is actively collaborating with Boeing, Collins Aerospace, and the FAA to resolve these certification issues, aiming to have all seats market-ready by the end of the year. The Allegris cabin upgrade, introduced in 2022, has faced several delays due to supply chain issues and certification challenges, particularly with the Boeing 787s. While the Allegris seats for the Airbus A350 have already been certified and are in service, the Boeing 787 version is still awaiting approval.
