Volaris Adds New Airbus A320 to Fleet Following Passenger Incident in Phoenix

Earlier today, a rather unusual incident unfolded at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport involving a Volaris Airbus A320ceo. As the plane was preparing for takeoff, a passenger somehow managed to deploy the emergency evacuation slide. While the exact reasons behind this unexpected action remain unclear, social media posts suggest that the individual was taken into police custody. To address the situation, Volaris quickly arranged for a replacement aircraft, an A320neo, to transport the passengers to their destination in Guadalajara, albeit with a significant delay.

The passengers of Volaris flight N526VL had to disembark and later reboard the substitute aircraft, N552VL, which eventually got them to Guadalajara after a six-hour delay, according to FlightAware. This incident not only disrupted the travel plans of 180 passengers but also potentially cost Volaris a substantial amount in operational expenses. The original aircraft, N526VL, was later flown to Guadalajara without passengers once it was deemed safe to fly again. Such incidents, known as inadvertent slide deployments (ISD), are typically due to errors during the door arming process or mechanical failures, rather than passenger actions.

While this type of incident is relatively rare, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has noted an increase in unruly passenger behavior in recent years. In the summer of 2024 alone, there were 915 reported cases, with 106 attributed to intoxication. The FAA has the authority to impose fines of up to $43,658 per violation for such behavior, and offenders may face lifetime bans from airlines or even be placed on a no-fly list. It’s a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining order and safety in the skies.
