Passengers on a recent Air India flight from the United States to India were in for an unexpected and unpleasant surprise when they discovered several cockroaches in their seating area. After alerting the flight crew, the affected passengers were promptly moved to different seats, allowing the flight to continue smoothly. However, the incident didn’t end there. The unsettling discovery led to a thorough cleaning of the aircraft during its scheduled stopover, ensuring that the flight remained on schedule without any delays. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Air India has faced issues with cockroaches on board.
Air India flight AI180, which regularly travels from San Francisco International Airport to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, with a stopover in Kolkata, was at the center of this incident. The flight, operated by Boeing 777-200LR jets, was reported by The New Indian Express to have been involved in this unfortunate event. Air India acknowledged the situation, stating that despite regular fumigation, insects can sometimes find their way onto the aircraft during ground operations. The airline has committed to a comprehensive investigation to identify the source and prevent future occurrences.
Interestingly, flight AI180’s route has changed over time. Previously, it flew non-stop to Mumbai, but due to geopolitical tensions resulting in the closure of Pakistan’s airspace to Indian airlines, the flight now takes a longer path over the Pacific Ocean. This change has occasionally required additional stopovers, such as in Vienna, due to airspace closures in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Currently, the flight is scheduled to depart San Francisco at 20:00 and make its stop in Kolkata before continuing to Mumbai.
