We’re thrilled to share the latest chapter in our journey: handing over the keys to our sweepstakes winner. It all began when we learned that Jennifer Hortman from Murrieta, California, was our lucky recipient. Jennifer, a certified flight instructor, recently achieved her airline transport pilot certificate, marking a triumphant return to aviation after a long hiatus. Her dedication is inspiring, having earned her ATP certificate and a type rating in a Cessna Citation XL, all self-funded.
Once we confirmed Jennifer’s eligibility, we set our sights on the best part of the sweepstakes tradition: the surprise reveal. We decided to surprise her at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in Wisconsin, a fitting venue for such an exciting giveaway. Coincidentally, this year also marked Jennifer’s 30th anniversary as an AOPA member, providing the perfect cover story. I called her with a fabricated tale about celebrating member milestones at AirVenture, inviting her to represent the 30-year honorees. To our delight, she agreed, rearranging her schedule to join us.
At AirVenture, Jennifer arrived decked out in aviation-themed attire, ready for what she thought was a simple membership spotlight interview. As the interview concluded, we led her to the crowd gathered around the sweepstakes aircraft. Our president, Darren Pleasance, began reading clues about the winner, gradually revealing her identity. The moment Jennifer realized she was the winner was priceless—her face lit up with shock and joy. She graciously accepted the keys, and in a heartwarming moment, called her husband to share the incredible news.
