Etihad Airways Debuts Airbus A321LR Flights: Abu Dhabi to Phuket

On August 1, Etihad Airways launched its first-ever Airbus A321LR service, flying from Abu Dhabi to the beautiful island of Phuket. The aircraft, registered as A6-LRA, made its way from Hamburg Finkenweder to Abu Dhabi on July 25. Etihad has big plans for the A321LR, with 20 on firm order and hopes to eventually operate between 30 to 40 of these jets. Each plane is designed to carry 160 passengers, featuring a unique layout with two first-class suites, 14 business class seats that convert into fully flat beds, and 144 economy seats. This configuration not only enhances passenger comfort but also extends the aircraft’s range.

Etihad has been connecting Abu Dhabi to Phuket since 2014, but this is the first time the route will feature a first-class option. Previously, the journey was serviced by larger aircraft like the Airbus A330-200 and various Boeing models, including the 777-300ER, 787-9, and 787-10. The introduction of the A321LR is a strategic move to cater to the leisure-heavy market of Phuket, offering a more tailored experience with its limited first-class seating. Initially, the A321LR will operate on this route until September 30, replacing the 787-9, which will be reassigned. The A321LR is set to return on January 1, 2026, with plans to double its frequency to two daily flights by May 1, making it a key player in boosting Etihad’s market share and competitiveness.

Interestingly, about 70% of Etihad’s Phuket passengers connect from European airports. However, the 13:50 A321LR departure from Abu Dhabi doesn’t align with incoming European flights, unlike the other departures at 08:55 and 21:55, which are more convenient for European travelers. This new service is a testament to Etihad’s commitment to enhancing its offerings and adapting to market demands. #EtihadAirways #A321LR #PhuketFlights #AviationNews
