The Airbus A350-1000 stands out as one of the longest aircraft ever crafted by Airbus, with its impressive fuselage stretching nearly 74 meters. This design was a strategic move by Airbus to challenge Boeing’s 777-300ER, which boasts a slightly longer fuselage and comparable seating capacity. By extending the base A350-900 model by 23 feet, Airbus positioned the A350-1000 as the fourth-longest commercial passenger aircraft currently in service. However, it will soon be surpassed by the Boeing 777-9, dropping it to fifth place. Despite not garnering as many orders as the A350-900, the A350-1000 is gaining traction, with over 350 aircraft now on order. So, what prompted Airbus to significantly extend the A350-1000?
The A350-1000 measures 242 feet (73.78 meters) in length, making it seven meters longer than the A350-900. This additional length allows the A350-1000 to carry more passengers, typically accommodating between 350 and 450, depending on the configuration. Airbus’s decision to develop a stretched version of the A350 was driven by the need to directly compete with Boeing’s 777 series, especially the successful 777-300ER variant. Since its introduction in 2004, the 777-300ER has been a standout in the 777 lineup, making it logical for airlines to seek a similar Airbus alternative, particularly one that offers modern upgrades and enhancements over the -300ER.
In terms of specifications, the A350-1000 features a fuselage length of 242 feet, a cabin length of 190 feet 3 inches, and a wingspan of 212 feet 5 inches. It is only surpassed in length by the Airbus A340-600 within the Airbus family, which measures 247 feet 5 inches. While the A350-1000 is currently the fourth-longest commercial aircraft, it trails just behind its competitor, the 777-300ER. Although Airbus could leverage much of the certification and development groundwork from the A350-900, creating the longer -1000 required some key modifications.
