From CAU Graduate to Goodyear Pilot: Navigating the Skies Behind the Blimp

Jack Branger is among the elite few who have the privilege of piloting the iconic Goodyear Blimp. A graduate of California Aeronautical University (CAU) with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics, Jack’s journey to this unique role is a story of determination and adaptability. Like many aspiring pilots, Jack faced the challenges of completing his flight training during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period marked by uncertainty and shifting career paths. Despite these hurdles, he earned a series of flight ratings and certifications at CAU, eventually working as a flight instructor there. His journey took a few unexpected turns, including stints as a tennis and pickleball instructor and tutoring students after moving back home. It was through networking with a neighbor that Jack found his way to the Goodyear Blimp, proving that persistence and connections can open doors to extraordinary opportunities.

Jack’s time at CAU laid a solid foundation for his aviation career. He took on leadership roles as Vice President and later President of the Alpha Eta Rho aviation fraternity, attended national conferences, and led the CAU Flight Team to a SAFECON Nationals appearance. These experiences not only honed his leadership skills but also gave him a competitive edge in the job market. Jack emphasizes the importance of engaging with people on campus and participating in extracurricular activities to gain real-world experience and stand out to potential employers.

Now, as Jack works towards completing his lighter-than-air rating with aspirations of becoming a blimp instructor, he encourages current student pilots to embrace the twists and turns of their career paths. He acknowledges that frustration is a normal part of job hunting but believes that passion, perseverance, and the right training can lead to incredible opportunities. For those watching the Goodyear Blimp soar over AirVenture, it serves as a reminder of what can be achieved with dedication and the right support.
