Top Air Forces: Ranking the World’s Largest Bomber Fleets

In the realm of strategic bombers, only three nations hold sway: China, the United States, and Russia. These countries are the only ones with operational bomber fleets, but the U.S. stands out with its advanced fifth-generation systems. Among its prized assets is the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit, a stealth bomber that remains a cornerstone of American military might. While China hasn’t officially unveiled any flying wing stealth bombers, recent social media buzz hints at their development. Despite not having the largest fleet, the U.S. is the only nation with a fifth-generation bomber in its arsenal.

Russia, on the other hand, has never quite matched the legendary B-52 Stratofortress, let alone the B-2 Spirit, even during the Soviet era. The B-52, affectionately known as the “BUFF,” continues to dominate the skies after more than 60 years of service. Russia’s bomber fleet primarily relies on the turboprop Tu-95 Bear and the jet-powered Tu-22M Backfire and Tu-160 Blackjack. However, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has taken a toll on these supersonic aircraft, and production struggles have made it challenging for Russia to maintain its fleet.

China is in the midst of modernizing its bomber force, with the H-6 serving as the backbone for now. This aircraft is a licensed version of the Soviet Tu-16 from the 1950s. However, China is reportedly working on the H-20, a stealthy flying-wing bomber inspired by the B-2 and B-21 designs, capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear payloads. As of 2025, China leads in bomber count with 209 aircraft, followed by the U.S. with 140, and Russia. Each country has its own design philosophy, with the U.S. focusing on stealth and precision, Russia on speed and mobility, and China on catching up with new technologies.
