When it comes to flying between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and New York JFK Airport (JFK), there are plenty of nonstop flights available. Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, and American Airlines are the main players offering direct routes. However, not everyone takes the straightforward path. Some travelers opt for more roundabout journeys, stopping in cities you might not expect. Using data from the US Department of Transportation, I explored some of the most popular and unusual routes people took between LAX and JFK last year.
Despite the convenience of nonstop flights, a surprising number of passengers chose connecting flights. Why? Well, there are a few reasons. Sometimes, flight cancellations on direct routes lead to passengers being rebooked on connecting flights. Other times, it’s all about the money—cheaper fares can be found on routes with stopovers, like those offered by Frontier through Las Vegas. Then there’s the loyalty factor; some travelers stick with their preferred airlines, like Alaska Airlines, even if it means a layover. And let’s not forget those who simply prefer the onboard experience of certain airlines, prompting them to choose one-stop options over direct flights.
The variety of routes people took is truly fascinating. From Las Vegas to Phoenix, and even San Diego, passengers found creative ways to get from LAX to JFK. In 2024, Delta’s nonstop service was the most popular, with over a million passengers, but Frontier’s Las Vegas connection also saw a fair share of travelers. It’s clear that when it comes to flying across the country, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Whether it’s for cost, convenience, or comfort, each traveler has their own reason for choosing the path they take.
