Why the FAA’s Complex Program Struggles to Win Fans

Since stepping away from my flying career, I’ve noticed that my fellow pilots rarely mention using the FAA’s FAASTeam program to fulfill the 61.56 biennial flight review requirement. When I dug into it, I realized why—it’s a bit more complex than it used to be when the WINGS program launched back in 1996. But if you’re up for the challenge, here’s a quick guide to navigating the process.

First, head over to the FAASTeam website (www.FAASafety.gov) and create an account. You’ll need to confirm your email and, if you have an airman certificate, enter your last name and certificate number. After setting up your security questions, check your email for a temporary password. Once logged in, change your password to something you’ll remember, and then explore the “Quick WINGS” section. This free program offers access to online safety courses and links your certificates and ratings to your account, making it easier to participate in the WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program. If you’re not tech-savvy, FAASTeam Representatives or some CFIs can help you set up an account.

Traditionally, flight reviews involve an hour of ground instruction and an hour of flight, but the FAASTeam alternative lets you attend a safety seminar and complete three hours of dual instruction over two years. While it’s not a pass/fail test, you do need to demonstrate proficiency in specific maneuvers according to FAA standards. CFIs can also renew their ratings by guiding three pilots through this process and attending a seminar themselves. So, while it might seem daunting at first, the FAASTeam program offers a flexible way to stay sharp and meet your flight review requirements.
